Patient Treatment Options

The Facts

Comparative effectiveness research (CER) measures the clinical and patient health outcomes of different medical and health care treatments– evaluating everything from medical effectiveness to cost.

Used appropriately, this research can improve health care quality and value by providing patients and physicians with sound evidence for good medical decision-making.

But CER can be misused.

If CER policies are adopted that implement research used to promote cost-effectiveness in the delivery of health care to patient, opposed to clinical-effectiveness, the ability of patients to access the care that is right for them could be put at risk.

The Challenge

PIPC will work to help ensure that any government-supported CER promotes improved quality of care and preserves patients’ ability to choose the treatment that is best for them.

Do It Right!

Patients, doctors and other health care providers must be part of the CER process – right from the start. Get informed
